Oil lamp for three wicks, cast and engraved bronze
Eastern Iran or Afghanistan; 10th-12th century
H: 20.5; L: 15.5; W:8.3 cm
Inventory number 4/1998
With its three wicks, this oil lamp could emit a strong light. The effect was further enhanced when the flame was mirrored in the upright reflector, whose bronze surface was originally polished and bright. Behind the reflector is a handle in the shape of a ring.
The stylized, angled animal legs give the oil lamp an unusual combination of naturalistic and geometric shapes. The reflector is decorated with a latticework of palmettes
