Peter Hansen (1868-1928)
The Roundabout, 1902
Oil on canvas

A roundabout spins young people around on a late summer evening. The sense of dynamic movement is enhanced by the slightly sloping perspective as well as by the close cropping of the roundabout’s top and the platform with horses and carriages. The young people’s movements and gestures as well as the light reflected in the faces of the children looking at the roundabout from a distance add a distinctive energy to the picture, further augmented by the gaudy colours and the light shining from various lamps.
Peter Hansen has captured a cheerful moment of children and young people being enchanted by the rare treat of a amusement ride on the harbour of Faaborg, a town in southern Funen. Peter Hansen lived in Faaborg himself, and in the years 1900 to 1903 he created a number of paintings that proved significant in his overall oeuvre and in Danish art history in general. Several of these have children and young people as their main motif, such as the large Children Skating outside Fåborg,1 in which Peter Hansen depicts a group of children from the town frolicking on a frozen lake on a cold winter day.
C.L. David acquired The Roundabout at the sale of the estate after Peter Hansen’s widow in 1949, alongside six other works. It is the earliest dated painting by Peter Hansen in The David Collection, which is home to a total of fifteen works by the artist.
