Flowerpot with stand; porcelain
Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory, 1776–1779
H: 15.5 cm
Inventory number KP 59
The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory began making flowerpots in its first years of existence. Different types were made; some were fluted while others were smooth, some were round while others had flatter curves. Their colours and decorative designs also showed great variety – although flowers, branches and leaves were often used to adorn such pots.1
This flowerpot was created during the period 1776–1779. It is placed on a loose stand and features fluted edges, both on the stand and on the pot itself. The wide flutes break up the entire body of the piece, which is decorated with relief edging and ‘Indian’ ornaments in iron red.
The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory also used ‘Indian’ ornaments (KP 5a-b) on coffee and tea sets, and these were quite popular. The decoration furthermore appeared on the so-called Turks’ Cups, also known as Türkenbecher or Türkenkoppchen (KP 4, KP 7a-b, KP 8, KP 29, KP 30).2
