Panel, carved wood with remnants of paint
Eastern Iran or Afghanistan; end of 12th-13th century
Maximum diam: 12.2 cm
Inventory number 1/2007
The panel has a carved decoration of flat palmettes that elegantly fill out the hexagonal field in a precise, uniform design. There are remnants of the original red and gold paint on the sides of the panels, and traces of a now illegible inscription with Arabic letters.
The lush palmettes of the vine scrolls are the type especially known from Ghaznavid art, and a dating to this dynasty’s rule or shortly after has been supported by a carbon-14 analysis.
The panel was originally part of a larger structure that held similar panels, for example a minbar.
