Part of an architectural frieze, carved and painted wood
Morocco, perhaps Spain; 14th century
H: 27; W: 78.5 cm
Inventory number 36/1996
The panel’s pattern achieves a fine balance between serving as a geometric border and comprising a vegetal ornament with recognizable elements such as pinecones and leaves. This stylization is found in the 14th century in Spain and Morocco, which maintained close cultural and political ties under increasing pressure from Christian powers.
Although the intensity of the colors can be due to later repainting, the sumptuous colors did harmonize well with the period’s building style, with patterned tiled walls and painted capitals and stucco.
The wooden panel probably embellished a lintel in the courtyard of a rich man’s house.
