Two limestone reliefs
Iran, Hamadan (?); c. 1200
H: 47; W: 62 cm
Inventory number 11a/1978 & 11b/1978
The reliefs were originally both sides of the same stone, which was split into two in modern times. The stone was probably used on the side of a staircase or on a balcony parapet in a Seljuk palace.
The reliefs belong to a little group of building parts of this type that are all said to come from the province of Hamadan in Iran. While vegetal ornaments and running animals at the top of the relief on the right are among the traditional motifs in Islamic art, the paired lions with a single head bear witness to the many new motifs that emerged in the period around 1200 among the Seljuks and their successors, partly under the influence of Western culture.
